Samsung 3D TV: Where the D stands for Dumb
Published May 18th, 2010
I admit 3-D television is a long way from being a viable product category. There is no programming available and the average consumer doesn’t want to have to wear a pair of goofy glasses that are more likely to get lost or broken than they are to be actually used for watching TV. So I’m sure the first thought of the ad executive who got the call to develop a spot for Samsung’s new 3-D television – apparently the first on the market – was something like “you’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”
That does not in any way excuse this spot.
We see a family out on a beautiful day enjoying a fun educational experience at an aquarium while the narrator asks, “Ever wonder how amazing it would be to experience life in another dimension?” They already are you dumb-ass!
Apparently Samsung thinks that instead of actually experiencing the world – which we do in three dimensions everyday of our lives – it’s a better idea for this family to go home, sit on the couch and watch the aquarium on television; in 3-D of course.
Yes, I get the analogy of the aquarium where the fish are behind glass like television was before Samsung provided this expensive new toy. But c’mon! Really? Hey, mom and dad don’t take your kids outside to experience life. Now they don’t ever need to leave the living room to experience all three dimensions.
Maybe Samsung should consider a promotional tie-in with Little Debbie’s snack cakes so that while the kids sit on the couch “experiencing the world” they can eat plenty of sugar-filled snacks. This plan should really help with the country’s childhood obesity issues.
